Is accident insurance compulsory in Switzerland?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Every\nperson employed in Switzerland is compulsorily insured against occupational\naccidents under the Federal Law on Accident Insurance (UVG). In addition,\neveryone who works at least eight hours a week for the same employer is also\ncompulsorily insured against non-occupational accidents (NBU).<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Health insurance vs.\naccident insurance<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In\nSwitzerland, a basic distinction is made between illness and accident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Health\ninsurance only covers illnesses and injuries that occur as a result of illness.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Accidents\nare injuries caused by external circumstances, such as a flower pot falling on\nyour head from a balcony or a fall from a ladder. These are accordingly covered\nby accident insurance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    As\nmentioned above, accident insurance is compulsory in Switzerland. However,\nwhether accidents are covered by the compulsory health insurance or by the\ncompulsory accident insurance of the respective employer depends on whether one\nis gainfully employed or not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Occupational accident\ninsurance<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    If you are\nemployed by a Swiss employer, you can rest easy. This is because employers are\nobliged to take out occupational accident insurance (OI) for their employees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    This covers\nthe costs of medical care in the event of accidents at work and occupational\nhealth risks. In addition, the employer pays the premiums for occupational\naccident insurance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    If you work for the same employer for at least eight hours, you are also insured against non-occupational accidents (NBU<\/a>). However, you have to pay this premium yourself or it is deducted directly from your salary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
